Head For The Hills

The sky is falling! The sky is falling! Head for the hills, find a good place to hide where the sky can't fall on you. That is what Chicken Little always had to say in a story I remember from my childhood. This story, of course, had a chicken that was little. Chicken little was the main and almost the only character in the story that I can recall. He was scared of everything, All the little noises, all the little problems, all the little mole hills, seemed like big mountains to him.

This chicken didn't like feeling anxious and scared all by himself, so he tried to convince as many as he could to be fearful along with him. Doom and gloom, I guess, just seems better if you have a crowd to discuss just when and how the doom and gloom is going to fall on everyone concerned. As I remember the story, he couldn't get anyone to pay him much attention. Everyone decided they would believe the sky was going to fall when they saw it actually come crashing down on them. They decided this chicken was just a little squirrelly. I can't remember the whole story but I suppose the chicken led a lonely fearful life, always afraid of what would happen next, always wondering when the sky was going to fall, always wondering when his world would come crashing down.

I hate to admit it, but I was once a big chicken little. I always made all the little problems (mole hills) into great big problems (mountains). I never allowed myself to feel happy, because, I just knew, everything good would soon come crashing down. I tried to convince as many as I could to be unhappy with me. Everything is hopeless why bother trying, was my philosophy. I am very happy that the word "once" is in the statement above. I once was Chicken Little and a whole lot of things that I don't even like to remember. The only good thing about remembering the person I once was, is the joy of seeing the radical change and knowing how God was able to make me a new creation in Christ.

Chicken little had one thing right, the idea about heading for the hills. He just had the wrong hill in mind that he was running to. Psalm 43:3 O send out thy light and thy truth let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill and to thy tabernacles.

Psalm 121:1 I will lift up mine eyes to the hills from whence cometh my help.

Ezekiel 34:26 And I will make them and the places round about my holy hill a blessing.

If you are trying to hide from God, that is something you can't do in the hills or anywhere else.

Jeremiah 23:24 Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him, saith the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth, saith the Lord.

Are you like Chicken Little? Are you always worried about what will happen next?

Philippians 4:6 (NIV) Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Do you feel like you will never find happiness that will last?

John 16:22 I will see you again and your heart shall rejoice and your joy no man taketh away from you.

Today if you don't know Jesus Christ as your savior, ask Him to come and live in your heart. He can make you into someone that can say I once was. If you have already accepted Christ, but you are still a chicken little, ask Jesus to fill you with his spirit, his power. Ask him for his joy and peace. He can give you the assurance of knowing no matter what problems come your way, no matter what circumstance falls on you, He will be with you guiding you through all of them. You don't have to be unsure about the future. Know that even if the sky should fall, it will be a joyful day as all of us who know Jesus Christ head toward the hills, toward the sky, with Him.

I Thessalonians 4:16,17,18 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God, and the dead in Christ shall rise first; Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air, and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore, comfort one another with these words.
